The 2008-09 Fleer Ultra Hockey set by Upper Deck delivers a collector-friendly product packed with vibrant photography, a large base set, and a standout rookie class. Known for its colorful design and fun parallel chases, Ultra returned in 2008-09 as an accessible, value-driven option for set builders and rookie collectors alike.
Release Date: October 20, 2008
The set features 250 total cards, with the final 50 cards (#201–250) reserved for Rookies. Many of the top names were issued via Rookie Redemptions, fulfilled after their official NHL debuts. Key rookies include:
Steven Stamkos
Drew Doughty
Claude Giroux
Blake Wheeler
Alex Pietrangelo
Veteran base cards feature dynamic action photography and a slick Ultra-branded layout collectors had come to expect.
Gold Medallion parallels fall one per pack with a shimmering full-bleed gold foil finish.
Ice Medallion parallels are serial-numbered to /100, adding a frosty premium touch to the chase.
A nod to Fleer’s EX-2000 roots, Essential Credentials returns in 2008-09 as a short-printed acetate parallel of the EX Base insert set. The cards are clear, foil-layered, and die-cut, creating one of the sleekest looks in the product.
There are three tiers of Essential Credentials:
Base – acetate version of the EX card, unnumbered
Essential Credentials Red – serial-numbered to (100 minus the player’s jersey number)
Essential Credentials Green – serial-numbered to the player’s jersey number
This numbering system creates uniquely low print runs for stars wearing low numbers—making the Green versions especially desirable and difficult to track down.
2008-09 marks the first time the iconic Jambalaya insert appeared in a hockey product. With its distinct die-cut elliptical design, textured foil, and explosive presentation, Jambalaya cards instantly became some of the most sought-after inserts in the sport.
The checklist includes superstars like:
Sidney Crosby
Alexander Ovechkin
Patrick Kane
Jarome Iginla
These cards are extremely tough pulls—often considered case hits—and have become grails for player and insert collectors alike.
The set features a number of other themed insert sets with classic Ultra styling:
Scoring Kings
Franchise Players
Difference Makers
Rookie Sensations
Season Crowns
Each insert brings foil accents, strong photography, and a mix of current stars and breakout talent.
Though not the centerpiece of the product, 2008-09 Ultra includes:
Fresh Ink autographs (on-card in many cases)
Ultra Uniformity jersey cards
These hits are found at longer odds but add hobby value to an otherwise insert-focused product.
With many rookies debuting post-production, Upper Deck used a Rookie Redemption system. These redemption cards were later exchanged for live rookie cards once players officially hit NHL ice—creating anticipation and long-term value for early breakers.
2008-09 Fleer Ultra Hockey delivers a sharp combination of strong rookie content, iconic parallel structure, and truly elite hobby chases. The Essential Credentials Red/Green variations add high-end complexity, while the first-ever hockey Jambalaya cards mark a defining moment in insert history. With its bold design, smart checklist, and layered chase structure, this release remains one of the most memorable Ultra sets ever produced.
A fun, lighthearted 2x per week dive into the hockey hobby. No stone is left unturned from new releases, legendary cards and sets, and deep dives into vintage collecting.
